As the year comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your contribution and continuing support. We faced a not too easy 2009 but its time to look ahead and therefore I count on you and your passion for perfection. GMs Regional Meeting

The tenth GMs Regional Meeting took place in Moscow at Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy in the beginning of December. Six General Manager from the Eastern Europe/Turkey region (Emrullah Akcacaya, Stuart Chase, Jan Chovanec, Bart Westerhout, Adnan Yucel) as well as the Regional Vice President Turkey & Eastern Europe Gerhard Struger attended and enjoyed the program of the two days. The GMs shared the latest news, summed the results of 2009 and discussed future plans. The meeting was an ideal networking platform. Thanks to everyone involved for organizing such memorable days.

Presstrip Moscow
Beginning of December Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy, Moscow hosted a press trip organized by Corporate Office Zurich and the hotel. Swiss and German journalists were enthused about the energizing city of Moscow, its history, the hotel and the professionalism of the Swissôtel team members. Four days of sightseeing, Russian food, hotel spa and restaurant experience fulfilled the main focus of the trip. It was a very successful journey and at this point again thank you to everybody involved to make this happen.

"To QiCong with Love" Community Event
To celebrate the 1st anniversary of Swissôtel Foshan, the hotel held a joint community event with QiCong School - a local special education school for disabled children. Among the attendees were government officials from local Education Bureau & Disabled Persons Federation. The highlight of this event was the cookie making class & competition where hotel team members and the students participated.

Swissôtel Kunshan
Celebrating the Fusion of Culture and Community
In the beginning of December a brilliant Christmas tree lighting ceremony took place at Swissôtel Kunshan. 14 children from the Eastern China Taiwanese filial school sang lovely Christmas songs to start the evening. The sponsorship between Swissôtel Kunshan and the All Star Football Club was also formally announced during the ceremony. Established two years ago, the All Star Football Club is the only international amateur football team in Kunshan, and is composed of more than 20 amateur players from all over the world. “I believe the All Star team is contributing to the harmony of our different cultures and communities,” said Stephen Fewell, General Manager Swissôtel Kunshan, “it is also Swissôtel’s desire to maintain a focus on the local community as well.

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony for SOS Children
Swissôtel Beijing celebrated its traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the beginning of December. On behalf of Swissôtel Beijing Hong Kong Macau Center Eric Piatti, General Manager Swissôtel Beijing made a donation to Beijing’s SOS Children’s village to support their project in China.

Vice Chairman of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference
Li Wu Wei, Vice Chairman of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference received a warm greeting from Ted Zhu, Executive Assistant to General Manager of Swissôtel Grand Shanghai. Mr. Li is also the director of the Economic Research Institute of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences departments, who pay special attention to the development of Creative Cultural Industry in Shanghai.

Canadian Chinese Artist Shi Ren presented his Paintings
Ten copies out of the total 15 paintings by renowned Canadian Chinese artist Shi Ren were on display in a lifestyle club on Wu Jiang Road, a popular pedestrian street in Shanghai, during the "Swiss Month" organized by Switzerland Tourism Bureau China. On display at She Ren's studio in Toronto, these 15 stunning works of art were painted by the 54-year old traditional Chinese landscape master artist during his travel to Switzerland, commissioned by Swissôtel Grand Shanghai a year ago for cross culture communications and future charity fund raising.

Vertical Marathon 2009 breaks new Records
The Swissôtel Vertical Marathon set new benchmarks in the sporting arena, as more than 1,600 stair runners blazed through 73 storeys to the top of Swissôtel The Stamford. German Thomas Dold, the world’s fastest stair climbing phenomenon beat his previous year’s record in a new World Record time of 6:46min. Whilst Women’s Open champion Suzanne Walsham defended her crown with her winning time of 8:29min. This year’s race inaugurated new categories including the Lovebirds Challenge where over 80 couples competed hand-in-hand and a Media – Team Dream Challenge where 10 of Singapore’s finest youth athletes raced 1,336 steps up in less than 15 minutes.

Rate Parity Certificate from Booking.com
Swissôtel The Stamford is proud to be awarded the Rate Parity Certificate from Bookings.com. As a partner of Booking.com, the hotel had successfully maintained the room rates and product parity in the Booking.com website for the period of July to September 2009. The hotel is one of the four hotels in Singapore who received this award.

Amazing Waiter Race Contest 2009
Two team members from the Food & Beverage department represented Swissôtel Merchant Court in the Amazing Waiter Race Contest 2009. A total of 27 teams from various hotels and F&B establishments participated in this contest. Senior Captain, Mohd Sairulnizam Bin Muhamad and Captain, Sallehudin Bin Mohd Ali from Ellenborough Market Café were joining the race for the first time and are both quick on their feet and steady with their hands. The team emerged as the 2nd runner up in the race, excelling in table setting, speed of clearing table and the final beverage race.

Run for Hope 2009 
As part of the efforts to contribute to the community, 40 team members from Swissôtel Merchant Court participated in the Run for Hope at East Coast Park. The run is an annual charity event organized by the National Cancer Centre Singapore since 1993 to raise funds for cancer research. To support this good cause, team members took part in the 4km run. The sporty ones gamely took up the 10km run. This is the second time that the hotel is participating in the event.

SOS Children’s Villages Charity Event
Swissôtel Nankai Osaka held its SOS Children’s Villages charity event. The opera concert co-hosted by JVC (Japan Volunteer Center) and Chocolate Christmas Children’s Party to celebrate re-launch of Swiss chocolate and dessert buffet. The event was a great success with lots of guests visiting and participating with a donation to SOS Children’s Villages. Guests also enjoyed the view of the 3-meter high chocolate Christmas tree in the lobby which was created by the Pastry Team based on 2009 Christmas theme, Chocolate Christmas.

Princess lighted the Christmas Tree
The Princess Soamsawali graciously presided over the opening of “The 4th Amazing Christmas” for lighting the Christmas tree at Swissôtel Le Concorde Bangkok’s lobby. The event was organized by the hotel’s management to proceed on a part from selling all products at Le Concorde Deli to donate to SOS Children Foundation of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of Her Majesty the Queen.

Annual Flower Show

Bangkok’s 23rd Annual Flower Show "Floral Fantasy" at Swissôtel Nai Lert Park returned as a star-studded affair. With celebrity-designed floral hats to sold-out performances by well-known local music artistes like Koh Saxman and NUVO, greater awareness was created for charity with proceeds from Floral Fantasy donated to the students at Umphang Wittayakom School, Tak Province this year. More than 20 professional florists put together a modern art flower exhibition. Visitors participated in various activities like flower arranging classes, cooking classes, fortune-telling or caricature-drawing.

Smoke-Free Hotel Gold Star Award
Swissôtel Nai Lert Park, Bangkok, received the Smoke-Free Hotel Gold Star Award and official certification as a Health Promotion Hotel. The programme is an initiative by the Green Leaf Foundation in collaboration with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation to increase the number of smoke-free rooms. Certified smoke-free hotels must fulfill requirements such as offering 75 percent smoke-free accommodation and over 85 percent or more of its staff must be non-smokers. Participating hotels of the programme will be widely publicised and promoted throughout Thailand and in over 30 countries around the world.

Candy Dulfer and Tarkan
For the second time this year Candy Dulfer, a very well-known Dutch jazz saxophonist, chose Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy for her stay in Moscow. Candy Dulfer came to the Russian capital with her mother, her manager, to present her new album “Funked up and chilled out”. Moreover, Tarkan, a famous Turkish pop-star, stayed at Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy during his visit to Moscow in November where he gave a concert for four thousand Russian fans. Tarkan, a World Music award-winning pop singer, has released several platinum-selling albums during his career, with an estimated 17 million albums sold.

Yours for an hour

Anthony Wan Chi Wai, a regular guest at Swissôtel Krasnye Holmy as well as an Elite Club Swiss Gold cardholder, enjoyed the “Yours for an hour” initiative during his stay in Moscow by attending a Russian cooking class in the open kitchen of Kai Restaurant. Together with Alexey Sayapin, Senior Souf Chef; Sergei Kosoruchkin, Senior Chef Leader Kitchen and Jean-Michel Hardouin-Atlan, Executive Chef , Mr. Wan learnt to make a Beefstroganoff for main course and Strawberry Romanoff for dessert.

Storytelling Event
To thank the most valuable clients for their continuous support, Swissôtel The Howard hosted the annual storytelling Event in theme with the Swiss winter spirit. Susanne Ulke, a professional Storyteller, came from Hamburg, Germany to the Swiss Chalet to tell clients stories of mystery and magic. Being in front of the cosy fireplace, she was accompanied by a musician who sang and played the Cello along with her stories. The experience and ambience fascinated and made it a memorable night for everyone.

Japanese TLSee Menus
TLSee, the new afternoon tea concept at Swissôtel The Howard, London has been very successful since it was launched in September 2009. In order to create more awareness in one of the target markets, Japan, the hotel has created menus and brochures in Japanese. Currently under development is a Japanese website and co-operations with tour operators such as JTB, which will result TLSee to be included in their 2010 tour programs.

Wishes come true

Santa Claus came to Swissôtel Dusseldorf / Neuss, where 80 little children from Neuss and their parents were waiting for him and his Christmas presents. As well as last year the hotel arranged a Christmas tree in the lobby with lists of wishes from socially deprived children. Last year hotel guests and team members satisfied more than 40 wishes, this year nearly twice the number together with another hotel in Neuss. Santa Claus was supported by Jörg Krauß, the new General Manager at the Swissôtel.

An important topic was standards, in addition, they were informed about the Rooms Division Platform and the Rooms Division Movie was presented for the first time. Lots of information and experiences were exchanged. With all the new information, fun wasn’t missing either.

Swiss Contest of the Best Young Receptionist of the Year
Out of 12 participating hotels, Nadja Weidner from Swissôtel Zurich - team member Front Office, won the second place at the Bucherer Trophy 2009. Every year in a very atmospheric ambience during the pre-Christmas period all Vice Directors and Chefs de Reception of 4 and 5 star hotels in Switzerland meet within their general meeting to elect the best young receptionist. Therefore, it is the most important contest for young receptionists all over Switzerland. Organized by the A.I.C.R. (Amicale Internationale des Sous-Directeurs et Chefs de reception des Grands Hôtels), the 15th edition of the Bucherer Trophy took place at the Crowne Plaza, Geneva at the end of November.

Concert evenings with music highlights, full houses and unforgettable performances in an intimate setting: For more than 20 years the AVO Session is a well established highlight in Basel’s cultural calendar. Traditional Gingerbread House
Nothing makes a more impressive centerpiece during the holiday season than a Gingerbread house and as every year Swissôtel The Bosphorus, Istanbul is celebrating Christmas with a traditional giant Gingerbread house at the hotel lobby. Preparation and the production of  the Gingerbread house took 6 days. 50kg honey, 30kg rye flour and 25kg white flour were used for the preparations. Guests and children of the hotel love it and enjoy it very much.

Famous novelist Dan Brown
Worldwide famous novelist Dan Brown stayed at Swissôtel The Bosphorus, Istanbul. He visited Istanbul for the promotion of his latest novel "The Lost Symbol", which is set to be published also in Turkish. The writer participated in a dinner to mark the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Altin Kitaplar, a Turkish publishing house. Moreover, a press meeting at Swissôtel The Bosphorus was organized.

Swissôtel Grand Efes, Izmir
An Italian Breeze

Swissôtel Grand Efes, Izmir hosted the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano who visited Izmir to meet with the Italian community who lives in town. In honor of the President, a dinner in Equinox restaurant was organized by Izmir Govenor’s Office. With the Italian wind in town, an "Italian Art, Music and Gastronomy" festival was held by Swissôtel Grand Efes. On the opening night the “Toscana Wind and Percussion Instruments Quintet” presented a stirring concert of famous Italian movie soundtracks. A special five course menu prepared by the world reknowned Italian Chef Fabio Testa was served at Equinox Restaurant.

Christmas Tree Lighting with Homeless Child Association and MEF Schools
Swissôtel Grand Efes celebrated the beginning of the festive season with a social responsibility project. The lights of the Christmas tree in the front garden were lightened by the General Manager Stuart Chase together with MEF School students, families, teachers and Homeless Child Association. Christmas presents made by MEF School students were presented to the Homeless Child Association President Neşecan Hürtürk. The event continued with a cocktail organized in the hotel lobby where the guests enjoyed Christmas cookies, chestnuts and mulled wine served by the banquet team.

Operatic Pop Group Il Divo

The international successful pop group formed by Carlos from Spain, David from the USA, Urs from Switzerland and Sebastien from France stayed at Swissôtel Lima for two nights. Il Divo offered a great concert in Lima with over 15,000 Peruvian fans as part of their 2009 world tour in order to promote their sixth album, The Promise!

Swissôtel Lima held an elegant dinner party for the members of the Swiss Loyalty Club in order to explain the new benefits of the renewed program. 475 years of Spanish foundation
During the first week of December, Quito celebrated its 475 years of Spanish foundation. As part of the traditional festivities, the annual beauty contest “Reina de Quito” took place. Swissôtel Quito hosted all candidates during their preparation time before the final competition. The crowned winner of this pageant works the entire year in the City Hall program for children with disabilities.

Meeting of the UNASUR
The Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs from South America met at Swissôtel Quito to celebrate the third meeting of the UNASUR (South American Countries Union) to discuss regional concerns over the military agreement between Colombian and U.S. governments, as well as issues between Chile and Peru. This meeting preceded the agreement reached at the UNASUR Presidential Summit held in August this year in Bariloche Argentina, where the representatives initiated a process to build confidence and promote security within the region.
